“TAKE CARE OF YOUR PLANET - All against climate change”

On December 7th-18th 2009, the United Nations alerted the world on the problems of climate change, in an important conference in Copenhagen, Denmark. The Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon asks for collaboration of all the citizens of the world. The Peace and Cooperation Foundation urges teachers and children around the world to take action against this problem.

Through the resolution nº 2994 (XXVII) of December 15th 1972, the General Assembly of the United Nations decided to proclaim June 5th “World Environment Day”:

This date refers to the day of the opening ceremony of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, celebrated in Stockholm (Sweden) in 1972. This Conference gave birth to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

The World Environment Day is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action. The agenda is: to give a human face to environmental issues, to empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development; promote the understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues; and advocate partnerships which will ensure that all nations and peoples may enjoy a safer and more prosperous future.

In preparation for this event, you could start the celebration on April 22nd 2010, Earth Day, by undertaking a commemorative task, like for example planting a tree.

The World Environment Day which will be held on June 5th 2010 is an opportunity to organise a big celebration during which an action plan in tune with our own capabilities will be proposed. The slogan of both our commitment and the ceremony is “Take care of your planet“.

Rules

Motto: “TAKE CARE OF YOUR PLANET - All against climate change”

1. DRAWING: Up to 6 years old. “A picture is worth a thousand words”.

Draw on a piece of paper or on cardboard the planet you would like to live in. You can use any kind of paint you prefer and any materials you would like to add (pine cones, cotton, flowers,...), but keep in mind that your mission is to protect the planet.

2. POSTER & SLOGAN: 7 to 12 years old. “The importance of setting an example”.

Soil deterioration continues at an alarming rate. Animal and vegetal species disappear at unprecedented speed. Climate change is the cause of the current sea level rise and increases the risk of flooding and drought. Intensive fishing leads to the overexploitation of sea resources. Both in urban and rural areas, billions of people don't have access to safe drinking water and sanitation. Stop! We don't want to live in such a world.

Help us find ways to protect the environment and save the planet. Portray your ideas in a poster with a catchy slogan.

3. MURAL: 13 to 16 years old. “Learning to cooperate”.

Taking care of the planet starts within oneself, but it is NOT an individual task. Natural resources are limited; it is essential to work together to cooperate and share these resources between everybody. Protecting the natural environment should be a common objective which unites us all. Join up with your classmates and make a mural in which you show that Unity is Strength. Without cooperation we cannot have a happy planet.

4. ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN: 16 to 18 years old.

Imagine you are a publicist and have to set up an advertising campaign to stimulate worldwide awareness of the environment and underline the importance of protecting the planet.

Design and set up the campaign “Take care of your planet“, using graphics and drawings and highlighting positive values.

5. MULTIMEDIA FORMAT TEACHER: World Environment Day (June 5th) or Earth Day (April 22nd).

Teachers are invited to celebrate the World Environment Day or Earth Day in their schools. During this event, they should present video recordings or photographic reports. They can also participate by describing an activity they organized to celebrate the event.

6. “Friends of the Planet Club”: For all categories and groups (family & friends included).

Protecting our planet requires teamwork! Set up your own club, give it a name and invent a logo and an anthem. Send us your work recorded on CD, DVD or any other audio-visual aid.

A world “Friends of the Planet Club” championship - a “mundialito” - will be organised in 2011.

Languages: Works can be submitted in any of the six languages of the United Nations: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.

Deadline: Works should be sent before July 5th, 2010, to the office of the Peace and Cooperation Foundation in Madrid (PREFERABLY by regular mail, but works sent by e-mail will also be accepted).

Works should clearly include the following information:

- Details of the author: full name, date of birth and age, address, telephone number and e-mail.

- Details of the school attended by the child: name, city, country, telephone number and e-mail.

International Jury: It will gather on October 24th, 2010, United Nations Day, at the Egyptian Institute.
 
Prizes:

- Four diplomas in each category will be awarded.

- Six prizes of 300 euros.

- Two airplane tickets offered by Airline Ambassadors will be awarded (for category six).

The decision taken by the jury will be published on the website of the Peace and Cooperation Foundation www.peaceandcooperation.org.

A selection of the best works in the children's category (up to six years old) will be published in the on-line Educational Television of the World Association of Early Childhood Educators (AMEI-WAECE): http://www.waece.org/ing/

Awards Ceremony: The ceremony will be celebrated in Kuwait on February 7th 2011, the School Day for Understanding and Peace.
